How much does a garage door cost? Your questions answered

Rodney, Auckland Garage Door cost and pricing guide

One of the first questions people often want to know when they call our company is: How much does a new garage door cost?

While price is important, selecting the right door and right company are the key to getting what you want the first time and not having any regrets down the road.

You are going to see your garage door every day for as long as you live in your home and your choice is critical to ensure maximum enjoyment, maximum increase in property value and minimum issues.

Price is a difficult question to answer without knowing your individual situation but I will do my best to explain some general pricing guidelines. With so many options and variables prices can vary drastically.

As a very simplified answer, for a single sectional garage door, fully installed with a motor, the price can range from $3000 for a base model steel door – $10000+ for an intricate custom door. For a double door the price can range from $3500 – $15000+. If your budget is tight there are some cheap imported options out there but it is generally a case of you the quality being spared for the sake of cost.

Things to factor in when purchasing a garage door

Whether you are building a new house or replacing an existing garage door there are a few things to consider when it comes to selecting the right garage door and the effects they have on the cost.

Garage door cost influencers:

We will try to cover these as well as possible. Keep in mind that there may be other factors that also influence how the door is made or installed and the related costs.

Garage door types and their cost

Sectional garage doors

Sectional doors are the most common type of garage door we install in the Rodney, Auckland area. They have a wide range of styles and colours and are generally the most cost effective option.

For a 4 panel single steel door prices can range from $3000 – $5500 including installation and a motor.

For a 4 panel double steel door prices can range from $3500 – $7000 including installation and a motor.

Roller garage doors

Roller doors offer a cost effective option for manual doors or taller doors, and we still install a lot of these into homes in the Rodney, Auckland area. They have a limited range of styles.

For a hand operated domestic roller door prices range from $1800 – $3000 including installation.

Domestic motors range from $700 – $1400

For a chain driven industrial or semi-industrial roller door prices range from $4000 – $9000 including installation.

Industrial motors range from $1500 – $2500

Tilt garage doors

Tilt doors are a fairly obsolete design. Sectional doors have replaced them as the standard and have fixed a lot of the issues that tilt doors had with safety and design. Because of this there are few companies that still make tilt doors.

We no longer make Colorsteel tilt doors but when we did, door prices ranged from $2,650 – $3,800 installed with a motor.

We still occasionally make Cedar tilt doors in exceptional circumstances. Expect to pay approximately 10-20% more than the equivalent Sectional Cedar door.

Garage door material

Steel

Steel is the most common material used for garage doors. It is strong, durable, cost effective and comes in a variety of styles and colours.

Steel doors can come in 5 thicknesses 0.4BMT, 0.55BMT, 0.6BMT, 0.75BMT and 0.9BMT depending on the manufacturer and style.

0.4BMT is suitable for roller doors due to the large number of ribs giving them strength. There are some manufacturers that also use it for sectional doors however this can produce quite a flimsy sectional door.

0.55/0.6BMT is the same as most roofing materials. It is strong enough for most applications and generally offers the best value for money. There are also the most style choices at this thickness.

0.75/0.9BMT makes a very strong door that is less likely to dent and will appear flatter. Due to the extra thickness these have to be folded instead of roll formed. They are generally only available in the premium styles. These can be up to 50% more in cost than the 0.55BMT thickness.

For a 4 panel single steel door prices can range from $2,300 – $4,200 including installation and a motor.

For a 4 panel double steel door prices can range from $3,000 – $7,500 including installation and a motor.

Timber

Timber offers a huge variety of options including simple tongue and groove, plywood and batten, barn style, flush mount, picture frames, aluminium overlays etc.

Cedar is the most commonly used material however other stable timbers can also be used. Prices can vary hugely depending on the complexity of the design and the materials used.

Prices can range from $5,000 for a simple single to $15,000+ for a very large or complicated design including installation and a motor. The majority of our timber doors are tongue and groove double sectionals and often come in at around $9,000 including installation and a motor.

Aluminium

Aluminium offers a low maintenance finish with excellent corrosion resistance.

It can either be made using Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) or Aluminium sheets. They are often accompanied by powdercoated tracks and hardware for a very high end look. They can also be made much wider than steel doors, 8 – 10m is not unheard of.

Prices can range from $4,000 for a simple single to $15,000+ for a very large or complicated design including installation and a motor.

Glass/Aluminium - Designer Doors

Much like a normal window, our Designer door is made using an aluminium frame with glass or acrylic inserts. The frames can be powder coated to match your joinery and the glass/perspex is available in a wide range of shades, colours and finishes.

Prices can range from $4,500 for a single to $12,000+ for a large or complicated design including installation and a motor.

Garage Insulation

Insulation is available on most sectional garage doors either factory fitted or retrofitted.

It is unavailable on roller doors.

Prices for a 4 panel steel door range from $450 – $850 depending on the size.

Prices for a 5 panel steel door range from $570 – $1,000 depending on the size.

Garage Motor vs Manual

Sectional and roller doors both have the option of either a manual installation or motor operated.

When installed as part of a package with a new door, you can save up to $450 over having one fitted at a later date

Sectional Garage Doors

A motor is generally recommended for sectional doors as it makes them a lot easier to operate.

Sectional motors range from $400 – $1,750 for standard motors and up to $3,000 for industrial strength motors.

A manual lock for a sectional door is usually around $150 – $190 fitted on a new door.

Roller garage doors

Roller doors are a bit more forgiving being manually operated and either come as hand operated, or chain driven depending on the size.

Domestic roller motors range from $400 – $1000

Industrial roller motors range from $700 – $3,500

Replacement & Renovations

To take down an existing door and dispose of it, prices often run from $60 – $220 depending on the work required. This is sometimes included as part of the door package or can be quoted separately. Whoever is undertaking this needs to be very aware of the dangers of the door springs and cables. These can be under a lot of tension and we have seen people lose fingers doing this incorrectly

When updating from a carport or old tilt door opening, there are often some alterations required to fit a new garage door. Prices can vary widely but basic alterations often run from $300 – $800

Your chosen garage door company should be able to arrange or suggest suitable builders to undertake this work.

Garage door size

Garage doors are all measured based on the daylight opening. We do not carry any ‘stock’ doors. They are all made to suit your exact opening. The size brackets below can be confusing so we offer a free measure and quote and will make sure you get the right sized door.

Doors come in price brackets depending on both the height and width of the opening. As the size goes up a second technician may be required due to weight of the panels or safety for working at height.

Below is the maximum size in the price brackets. The door will be made to suit the actual opening size. Keep in mind that this is only for our doors. Other manufacturers may have different size brackets.

Sectional Garage Doors

Height

  • 4 Panel 1805-2290mm

  • 5 Panel 2295-2865mm – cost approximately 20% more than 4 panel

  • 6 Panel 2870-3440mm – cost approximately 35% more than 5 panel

Width

  • Undersize – Less than 1950mm – These small doors can actually cost more as there can be extra manufacturing requirements and restrictions on the springs.

  • Single – 1950mm, 2500mm, 3000mm

  • Double – 4200mm, 5100mm – approximately $450-$550 more than a single and $100-$200 between the 2 sizes.

  • Extra Large – 5400mm, 5700mm, 6600mm – Stepping up to need a second technician for most installs. Approximately $300-$400 more than a standard double and $300-400 for each size step.

  • Oversize – 6600mm+ – The largest standard door we make is 6600mm. Anything over that is custom made and will easily double or triple the price of the extra large door.
