About garage servicing & maintenance

Reduce the likelihood of needing a repair in the first place with regular servicing.

Servicing your garage door and opener is just as important as servicing your car. Much like the engine of your car, your garage door is made up of numerous moving parts designed to lift and lower your garage door safely and efficiently.

Ongoing preventative servicing ensures that your garage door continues to function within factory specifications and greatly reduces the risk of failure and repair bills down the track. Regular preventative servicing is also required to maintain your Warranty.

Prevent these issues with timely garage servicing:

  • My garage door is too loud

  • My garage door lowers and raises slowly

  • My garage door is jumping on the tracks

Maintenance of your garage door and opener is critical to ensuring its smooth, quiet, reliable operation, and in most cases is necessary to ensure your warranty remains valid.

Owner's DIY Maintenance Guide

What garage maintenance can I do myself?

Clean your garage doors (every fortnight)

ZINCALUME® / COLORSTEEL® FINISH DOORS:

Your COLORSTEEL® door has been pre-painted with a silicone modified polyester formulation, which is one of the best paint films available today. However good a product may be, all exposed surfaces require some attention to guard against corrosion and any other harmful atmospheric effects.

Washing the door with clean water and a cloth every 14 days is recommended. More frequent washing is advised in salty or industrial fallout areas.

Remember, when you think of cleaning your car, think of cleaning your door.

DO NOT WASH THE AUTOMATIC OPENER, IT WILL VOID THE WARRANTY AND COULD CAUSE ELECTROCUTION.

Lubricate your garage (every 3-6 months)

There's six garage components that can be lubricated:

  1. Guide tracks: Clean the internal sections of the guide tracks with a cloth dampened with mineral turps or methylated spirit - do not use grease or oil on the guide tracks.

  2. Steel hinges (If fitted): Sparingly lubricate with an all purpose machine oil. Also lubricate wheel to axle bearings.

  3. Plastic hinges: No lubrication is generally required, however silicon spray may be used if necessary.

  4. Springs (Where accessible): Wipe over with an oily rag.

  5. Locks: Your lock does not require special maintenance, however if the key becomes stiff, a spray lubricant such as RP7 is recommended. Do not grease the lock.

Check & Inspect

Here's 4 things you can check to ensure reliable garage door operation:

  1. Lifting cables (if fitted) | Wear: Check for wear through the cables by rubbing. If there is fraying or signs of corrosion contact us. These cables are under extreme tension and should never be adjusted, except by fully trained Dominator dealers.

  2. Lifting cables (if fitted) | Tension: While the door is up, visually check the connection between the cable and the drum at the top. If the cable is loose it may detach. These cables are under extreme tension and should never be adjusted, except by fully trained Dominator dealers.

  3. Fasteners | Tight & Secure: Check all screws, nuts and bolts to ensure they're tight and secure.

  4. Springs | Tension: It is natural for springs to lose tension. Should the door become hard to operate or completely inoperative, contact us.

Maintenance for timber garage doors

We use and recommend Dryden WoodOil. The wooden garage panels are fully coated in this wood oil before they leave our factory.

The door should then be cleaned if necessary and coated with a second application on completion of site activity, between 30 and 90 days after install.

A maintenance coat (3rd) is required 12 months from 2nd site coat to allow more protection and colour enhancement.

After appropriate initial coats, annual re-application of Dryden WoodOil is recommended to ensure that exterior surface, all edges and end grains are coated completely. If your door is North facing it is recommended to do so every 6 months.

What shouldn't I do?

Attempt to adjust the springs or cables

These springs and cables are under extreme tension and should never be adjusted, except by fully trained Dominator dealers.

Remove any hardware, parts or sections of your door

Your door needs all its parts attached. Do not remove them.

Wash the automatic opener or any electrical parts

This will void the warranty and could cause electrocution.
